CONCLUSIONS FROM THE PREMIER SOUTH EUROPE / MEDITERRANEAN REGIONAL CONFERENCE OF WORLD HERITAGE CITIES.

RSESM

OBJECTIVES:

The Regional Secretariat for Southern Europe / Mediterranean was constituted in Córdoba (Spain) on 18 September 2001, with the aim of setting up a network of member cities of the Organisation of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) in order to implement common projects and strengthen the ties of co-operation between these cities that share a common geographical, historical and cultural framework.

PROJECTS: 2002/2003

  1. Creation, updated maintenance, presentation and dissemination of a database of the cities and their political and technical representatives.
  2. Publication of a catalogue book of all the cities in the Regional Secretariat.
  3. Joint participation in Tourist Fairs and Workshops.
  4. Holding periodical meetings for co-ordination purposes and to exchange experiences in the field of tourism.
  5. Teaching and training of professionals from the sector.
  6. Exchange of information on investment or commercial opportunities.
  7. Creation of a regional secretariat web page allowing for exchanges between our cities.
  8. Set up an inter-university forum that favours teaching and research exchanges between our academics.
  9. Creation of a basic video library and CD collection covering the most relevant aspects of the artistic and cultural heritage of our cities, to be used in schools and generally broadcast.
  10. Creation of a database to locate actors and agents from the artistic and cultural worlds, with the aim of promoting mobility and exchange.
  11. Set up a virtual gallery where the work of our contemporary creators in the different fields of the plastic arts can be exhibited.
  12. Favour the creation of multilateral networks (3-5 cities) allowing for projects to be presented to be financed by the programmes funded by the European Union.
  13. Study the creation of European routes with the EU authorities.
  14. Study holding a macro-event to exhibit and disseminate creations in the plastic, visual, scenic and musical arts. This “International Festival of Cities” could be held every two years and rotate its location, with each edition organised by one or more cities from each country in the regional secretariat.
  15. Articulate a network through Work Campuses or youth hostels allowing for cultural exchange, knowledge and tolerance between generations.
